To first of all give you a bit of background to the series…
'Born in the 70s' (working title) is an in-depth exploration of what British twenty and early thirty-somethings really get up to… What do we eat, think, smoke and say? Where do we work, do we like it and how do we feel about our colleagues? How happy are we with what we’ve got and how hard do we work to change it? How do we look after ourselves, spiritually, mentally or physically? How do we feel about death and what are we most passionate about?
Starting from a brand new, comprehensive survey conducted throughout Britain, 'Born in the 70s' is filled with personal stories not only from the seemingly ordinary people who conform to every average, but also from the extraordinary people whose differences help to shape the attitudes and aspirations of this generation. It is guaranteed to get the audience talking, and as one of the first high profile programmes for the BBC’s newest channel - BBC 3, 'Born in the 70s' will have a media impact that reaches far beyond the screen.
These fascinating revelations will be brought to life using the kind of computer generated effects that made 'The Human Body' and 'Walking with Dinosaurs' such compelling TV. From health, disease and our working environment to our homes and friendships, from the stuff we put into our bodies to the things that come out, 'Born in the 70s' is a ground breaking and ambitious new TV series, creating the first ever Doomsday book for the MTV generation.
This ten part series of half hour programmes will take a fresh look at our homes, offices, relationships, health, values, sex, friends, bodies as well as the way we feel about our looks and where and how we like to go clubbing – and we are looking for as many people possible to get involved. I hope this gives you a good idea of the series, which will be based largely on a national survey conducted by Taylor Nelson Sofres that will ask 22-35 about all aspects of their lives to find out what our generation is all about.
In terms of how the series is structured, each programme contains six observational documentary pieces about articulate, intelligent, self-aware people who are living outside of the average for one reason or another, but who have a clear perspective on their reasons for doing so or on the way in which this affects their life. Each film will be a personal story about the choices that that person has decided to make in life and/or the situation in which they find themselves – for example (across the series) these stories range from : a prawn fisherman off the coast of Stornaway who works a regular 20-22 hour day to make a living, a man who left his job as a government database manager to join the circus and an artist who works at the facial trauma unit at London Hospital and whose art frequently helps victims to come to terms with their new and unfamiliar appearance.
The series looks to challenge expectations and pre-conceptions – and as such each film within each programme stands alone, in so much that each piece is lead by the contributor – no professors or ‘experts’ are invited to comment on the film or on someone’s life choices.
I would be thrilled if you were at all interested in getting involved with the programme that we are making as we are very eager to feature a story about a full time campaigner and activist who sees their work as a vocation and I know that we would be particularly interested in talking to any 22-35 yr olds who is involved with the Asian gay and lesbian scene and who is involved with campaigning for gay and lesbian rights.

I went to club kali for the first time the other night, i have to say it was
the worst night of my life, the guys were all full of themselves and they thought
they were gods gift. They may of been good looking but they were so shallow,
most of them couldnt even dance. They were also very racist towards non asians
and between themselves.

With reference to the message left by an anonymous visitor regarding
Club Kali on Oct 19th 2001.
I was at Kali that night too, and Garba music was played non-stop as it always
is from 10pm to 11pm.
After the garba music when the club night started, a fire was detected, and
the DJ did use the power of the microphone to alert all clubbers and get them
to safety.
The staff that night were fantastic, to keep the moral boosted and ensuring
that everyone was safe and to keep people calm, ignoring their own feelings.
From my & my friends perception, their efforts were 200%. When the fire
was eliminated, the club deemed safe to enter, the night re-started in full
swing.
And it packed out too! It was one of the busiest nights at Club Kali and one
with the most excitement & action ;)
If the anonymous person wanted to dance to 6hrs of garba, then perhaps they
should have gone to the local community centre. At the end of the day, any club
has to cater for everyone. The fact that they played garba music for an hour
at the start and some a little later, i think was a good change, but a whole
night of dandiya and garba would have bored most people.
The club attracts a wide variety of crowd, from south asian, european, latin
american and african cultures & thus the dj's try to cater for the crowd
as much as they can. Come on, u don't go to GAY and expect them to play ALL
the songs in the order you want to hear them? Just like any club night, u make
a request, and if the dj has the music, they will play it. Next time, come to
the cash desk and request your melody :)
As for clearing the dance floor midway at 2am for the 2nd round of garba via
announcements, don't u just hate it when u are having fun, and someone tells
u to stop, so they can start something new, and then 30 min later u return back
to the club music? Stopping the night would have been impractical especially
since all the staff & dj's that night were doing all they can to ensure
people had fun.
And a lot of people do not know how to play garba, which is why you may have
found that the 2nd round was a lot more confusing, but the first hour of kali
was fantastic, and my partner, friends and I all had an awesome night, from
playing garba inside, to dancing outside with some friends and teaching a lot
of them just how to play dandiya and do garba.
And as for a band to come and play, well this year Rita and Ritu organised the
Lady Marmalade song danced by myself (Sahil), Bengali Boy, Simon & Aaron
just for all of you which you really appreciated. Each Kali night is treated
with as much organisation as any other.
In my humble opinion, you should be thankful the night happened, and especially
congratulating the staff who made sure that it was a good night in its own weird
way. I wasn't working that night, but after the fire issue, I made sure I was
helping people into the club, as well as letting all the taking coats/bags as
quickly as possible. I was literally shaking from panic, anxiety of how people
enjoy the night, and so much to the point, that I helped clear the stage before
we were to start, and setup the props so that the rest of the staff could carry
on with their duties to settle you guys.
I was completely exhausted when I was doing the dance, but the show has to go
on, and thats a motto that both Rita and DJ Ritu have, that despite any problems,
they ensure that the crowd go back home having enjoyed most of the night, if
not all of it!
Anyway, come on the 15th of February 2002, I'll be doing another dance spectacular
with my partner and a very good friend. It'll be a dance competition!

Well guy I was really diappointed when i went to ClubKali last Friday the 19th.
Got there around 11:30 and everyone were outside due to a fire alarm/scare.
Stayed out in the cold for almost 2 hrs and it was raining a bit. But that could
not
be avoided as its not the organisers fault. But I was disappointed with the
music. It meant to be a grat night for
Garba..and i was really looking forward to it with live music like last year,
there were nothing.
At least when they decided to play the Garba Cd music , the Dj could have alerted
the people to get ready or keep the dancing floor free for
the Garba Dancers..my god dont even know when it started nor finish. People
were all over the place and it was a waste of time really.
I wish i went to Garba at my local community would have been more fun.
People cant dance Garba with CD playing am sure Rita/Ritu could have hired the
same band who played last year or someone else.I have never been so
disappointed like that.
I am sure many of those who went there that night feel the same. This is not
anything to do with bitching just to let the club know how I felt that night
The Dj has the power and the microphone to alert people to perpare themselves
for the Garba music..
I think the whole night was rubbish ....How can a Dj play arabic music one after
the other..
The only thing I appreciated was the Show Sahil, bengali boi and the other two
guys did on the stage. I think it was great ..keep it up guys.

an alternative to the scene. The atmosphere is completely 'attitude free' and
the music is palatable. If there were any suggestion I would like to make, it
would be to play more Arab and Turkish music. You guyz really dont know what
you are missing out on, especially the hindi/arab mixes. I come from an Arab/Asian
background and know this music would definately hit!

However there is a little comment I would like to point out. There
was a very slim guy dressed in black and shortish hair..he had not trousers
on just his front bit covered..Looked as if he was

I think that was so revolting, disgusting and Rita should have refused him
entry to the club that night. I know its a dress to thrill/kill place and you
