This is Club Kali Stories — a six‑part podcast series celebrating the legendary club night that’s been breaking boundaries since 1995.

Club Kali first opened their doors in 1995, at a time when South Asian LGBTQ+ folk needed a safe space to come together and celebrate South Asian heritage through music and dance.

Club Kali became a space that provided a sense of belonging and cultural expression. A safe haven where people could freely express themselves with South Asian culture at the heart of it all.

Club Kali became a space that provided a sense of belonging and cultural expression. A safe haven where people could freely express themselves with South Asian culture at the heart of it all.

The Club Kali dancefloor became a home away from home. Here people formed lifelong friendships and found their chosen family. People to dance with, to fall in love with, make connections with. And, to become part of a lifelong, supportive, global community which went way beyond the club walls.

Club Kali built bridges to break down barriers. They had space for service providers to give out resources and support groups within the club. Many felt inspired to set up their own groups and organisations supporting the South Asian LGBTQ+ community and the diversity of needs.

The legacy of Club Kali with DJ Ritu MBE and Rita Hirani OBE at the helm has created ripples and waves over the past three decades. But, what does the future look like?
